BANGKOK - Thailand has officially launched a comprehensive strict traffic law enforcement campaign beginning April 1, 2026, as part of the government's ongoing efforts to reduce road accidents and improve public safety on the nation's roadways.

The new enforcement measures include significantly increased penalties for traffic violations, enhanced checkpoint operations across all provinces, and the deployment of additional traffic police personnel in high-risk areas.

Key changes under the new enforcement regime include:

    •    Doubled fines for speeding violations
    •    Mandatory license suspension for repeat offenders
    •    Stricter DUI enforcement with zero-tolerance policies
    •    Mandatory helmet use for all motorcycle passengers
    •    Enhanced vehicle inspection requirements

"Road safety remains one of our top priorities," said a spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police. "These measures are designed to save lives and create safer roads for everyone."

The campaign will focus particularly on major holiday periods when road accidents typically spike. During the recent Songkran festival period, authorities reported a significant increase in traffic violations, prompting the enhanced enforcement measures.

Motorists are advised to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and insured, and to carry all required documentation while driving. Random checkpoints will be conducted nationwide to verify compliance.

The government has also announced plans to invest in road infrastructure improvements, including better signage, lighting, and road surface conditions in accident-prone areas.

For tourists and expatriates driving in Thailand, authorities emphasize the importance of understanding local traffic laws and obtaining the proper licenses and insurance coverage.
