PATTAYA – A foreign tourist was violently beaten by a group of motorcycle taxi drivers in Pattaya after a Songkran water fight escalated into a serious physical assault.
The incident occurred when the tourist, while participating in the traditional Songkran water celebrations, accidentally or playfully sprayed water on several motorcycle taxi drivers (known locally as mor mot). The drivers reportedly became enraged and immediately confronted the tourist. According to witnesses, the situation quickly turned violent as multiple motorcycle taxi drivers began punching and kicking the tourist. The victim was reportedly knocked to the ground and continued to be beaten even after he was down.
The brutal attack was captured on video by bystanders and has since gone viral on social media, sparking outrage among both locals and foreigners. Pattaya police confirmed they are investigating the incident and have identified several of the attackers. So far, no arrests have been publicly announced, although authorities stated they are actively reviewing the footage and gathering statements from witnesses.
Songkran, Thailand’s traditional New Year water festival, is known for its joyful and playful water fights. However, this year’s celebrations in Pattaya have been marred by several reports of aggression and violence, particularly involving motorcycle taxi drivers who are often criticized for their aggressive behavior toward tourists.
This latest incident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns about tourist safety in Pattaya and the sometimes volatile temperament of certain local service groups during the festive period.
