BANGKOK — Thailand's Songkran festival has been crowned the world's liveliest festival, according to the government, which hailed the recognition as proof that the traditional Thai New Year has captured the hearts of people across the globe.
Government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said on Wednesday that this year's nationwide celebrations highlighted the festival's broad appeal, building on the prestige of its recognition by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. "Countries around the world are aware of the recognition, which draws people from across the globe to experience its cultural, traditional and joyful dimensions," Rachada said.

The festival's infectious energy was showcased not only on the streets of Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Pattaya but also in the creative output of 42 embassies based in Thailand. Diplomatic missions from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, India, Belgium, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Australia and the United States all produced contemporary content celebrating Thai culture and the unique charm of Songkran, the spokeswoman noted.

Major international news agencies also turned their lenses on the water-soaked revelry. The Associated Press, Reuters, Euronews and China's Xinhua all featured extensive coverage of revellers splashing through the streets of Bangkok, particularly along the iconic Khao San Road. The Newswire of North America went a step further, dubbing Thailand's Songkran the "World Water Festival" and noting that the event effectively promotes the country's economy and tourism. "The Songkran festival was widely reported. They consider it as one of the greatest and liveliest festivals of the world," Rachada said. "It reflects joy and a blend of cultural and contemporary elements."

Even as the water flew and the music thumped, international observers took note of Thailand's commitment to safety. The Straits Times reported on the extensive safety measures put in place for Songkran, including road safety protocols and guidelines for proper behaviour at celebration venues. The government said such coverage reflects international standards for festival organisation and demonstrates that Thailand can host world-class events while protecting both revellers and the public. With the global spotlight firmly fixed on the kingdom's water-soaked New Year, Songkran has cemented its reputation not just as a national treasure but as one of the most vibrant and joyful celebrations on the planet.
