PHUKET — Three French nationals have been arrested in Patong after brutally attacking a Thai man who asked them to stop spraying water during Songkran celebrations, an incident that police say escalated from a minor request into a violent assault that left the victim seriously injured.
The suspects initially denied any wrongdoing when first taken into custody, authorities said. However, under further questioning, all three confessed fully to the attack. The victim suffered severe injuries, including heavy bleeding from the mouth, and required stitches as well as follow-up X-rays to assess the full extent of the damage. In a disturbing twist, police also confirmed that the same group attacked a Thai woman in a separate but related incident, leaving her injured as well.
The case has reignited concerns about tourist behaviour during Songkran, a festival built on goodwill, water splashing and cultural reverence. While millions of revellers—both Thai and foreign—enjoy the annual New Year celebrations without incident, authorities have made clear that violence, particularly against locals, will not be tolerated. The three French nationals now face legal proceedings as investigations continue. Officials have also reiterated that respect for local customs and the safety of others must remain at the heart of all Songkran festivities, regardless of nationality.
