BANG KRUAI, Nonthaburi — A 16-year-old boy was killed and at least two others were injured late Friday night after a large group of motorcyclists panicked at the sight of police and crashed while fleeing at high speed in Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi province.

Police were alerted to the multi-vehicle collision at approximately 11:55 p.m. on Nakhon In Road, near the Rama V roundabout in front of Rajapruk University. Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers discovered the body of the 16-year-old male victim, identified only by the initial “A,” lying on the roadway adjacent to a fallen Honda Wave motorcycle.

The scene was littered with scattered motorcycle debris and personal belongings, indicating a chaotic chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles. In addition to the fatality, the rider of the Honda Wave sustained injuries at the scene, while two other victims had already been transported to Bang Kruai Hospital for treatment. Investigators noted that several riders managed to flee the area after the crash, either continuing to ride their damaged motorcycles or escaping with friends despite sustaining injuries.

According to preliminary investigations, the incident originated from a large gathering of nearly 100 motorcycles near the Bang Si Thong intersection. When patrol officers moved in to inspect the assembly, the riders allegedly panicked upon seeing police lights and hearing sirens. Fearing that their modified or unregistered motorcycles would be impounded, many riders dispersed rapidly, leading to the fatal high-speed collision.

Witness accounts from the area corroborated the sequence of events. A security guard from a nearby housing estate reported observing the large convoy of motorcycles traveling in two separate groups at excessive speeds. Bystanders reportedly heard individuals shouting that they were being chased by police just before the crash occurred.

Local authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Police are currently reviewing closed-circuit television footage from the surrounding area to identify the riders who fled the scene and to reconstruct the precise dynamics of the crash. Investigators are also working to identify the injured parties and determine the extent of their involvement in the illegal gathering.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by Thai law enforcement regarding illegal motorcycle gatherings and street racing, which frequently occur in suburban and semi-urban areas. These events pose significant public safety risks, often resulting in severe accidents, noise pollution, and disruptions to local communities. Police agencies across the country have periodically intensified crackdowns on such assemblies, utilizing traffic checkpoints and surveillance to deter unlawful riding and confiscate modified vehicles.
